Jungja Joy Yu's book is both concise and clear. Beyond her discussion of the han-jeong dynamics of Korean culture, her broad historical overview of the many religious contributions to women's oppression is very enlightening, from Shamanism, Buddhism, and Confucianism to Christianity. This prophetic book gives voice not only to the oppressed women of Korea, but to women everywhere, and shines a clear light on continuing patriarchalism in the contemporary church. Her brave willingness to share her own personal experience makes her critique all the more poignant. But it's also a book about healing, about the power of community through healthy jeong-filled solidarity.

Great book! Breaking the Glass Box is an informative, academically written book about the negative cultural treatment of women in Korean society. As a non-Korean, I was shocked by the Han culture in Korean society which disempowers women. Fathers, husbands, and sons all have the power to control women in traditional Korean culture. The author points out that the area of worst discrimination for women today is in the Korean Christian church. All parts of the book and informative and interesting but the strongest part is where the author makes suggestions as to how Korean women can break the glass box of Han culture that they are trapped in. These suggestions are very practical and easy to use and can offer liberation from the Han aspects of Korean culture. Very informative and educational.
